He said he was going to be able to make it comfortable. He was the one that opened up his mouth and wanted to fight at 168. You know he was confident about being able to make 168. ![]() RODRIGUEZ: I mean Chad Dawson hasn’t fought at 168 for six years and a half. What are your views on the fact that Chad had to come down to 168 and do you think that he may have been a little weight drained coming into this one? I was really surprised to see that.ĬIANI: You said Dawson didn’t look at his best and a lot of fans are talking. He didn’t look like he was at his best, but Andre Ward is just one of those fighters that doesn’t allow his opponent to be at their best. I’ve sparred with Chad Dawson before and I know he’s a good fighter. He broke him down and Chad Dawson looked like a broken man in the ring. Actually I was really surprised, not just that Andre Ward beat him but how he beat him. Were you surprised by how dominant Andre was in that fight with Chad, which was viewed by a lot of people as a 50-50 type fight going into it? I’m ready to take on the young prospect coming up. So yeah, it puts on a lot of pressure, but we as fighters we perform well under pressure. Andre Ward put on a great performance against Chad Dawson, arguably the best light heavyweight right now. RODRIGUEZ: It’s definitely a lot of pressure. He’s undefeated, he’s strong minded, and I think he’s a very good prospect coming up.ĬIANI: Now how do you feel about having the opportunity to have your bout broadcast as the main event on HBO following a fight they just had this past weekend, the big fight between Andre Ward and Chad Dawson? RODRIGUEZ: I think he’s one dimensional, a strong fighter, comes forward. I’ve been working with Cornelius White, who’s top ten in the world at 175, and Don Mouton and me did ten rounds on Tuesday, and I feel great.ĬIANI: Now when you look at Escalara, your opponent, what do you think of him as a boxer? Me and Ronnie had a really good training camp where we were able to sit down and learn a few things, and just get a really good game plan for this next fight. ![]() So you’re confident in your preparations for this fight thus far? You said the training camp is going great. I’m here in Houston, Texas with Ronnie Shields having a great training camp.ĬIANI: Great! Now you have a big fight coming up September 29 against Jason Escalara. How’s everything going, Edwin?ĮDWIN RODRIGUEZ: Everything is great. This is Geoffrey Ciani from East Side Boxing and I’m here with super middleweight contender Edwin Rodriguez. ![]() He also provided opinions on a variety of topics, including the chemistry he shares with head trainer Ronnie Shields, Andre Ward’s impressive victory against Chad Dawson last weekend, his idea on what it would take to beat someone of Ward’s caliber, and more!
